How To Dress When Working From Home
With the pandemic nearing its one-year anniversary, millions of Americans have now become experts at this whole “working from home” thing.
But, as we get more accustomed to Zoom calls, Google docs, and virtual happy hours, it’s critical that we don’t get too accustomed to other things... like those comfy sweatpants and soft slippers.
While those might seem like the most comfortable options for your fashion wardrobe while working from home, it’s actually crucial to your productivity, motivation, and self-esteem to continue to dress professionally – even if you’re just dressing for your couch.
Comfort Is Key
Dress clothes can be comfortable – really!
It’s all about the material you choose for your clothing.
For example, opt for a casual, soft chambray shirt instead of a stiff button up. T-shirts can also be acceptable as long as they look clean and polished. No holes, please.
A cashmere sweater is also a great choice for comfort, warmth, and style.
Look for items that have stretchy fabrics and elastic waists. But not too stretchy, of course. Oversized sweatpants and your bathroom robe are never acceptable choices, no matter how plush they may seem.
Notice the Neckline
For ladies, make sure you keep an eye on your neckline. Our screens are typically angled at a downward direction, so make sure your neckline is high enough that the camera doesn’t get an unprofessional shot.
A classic crew neck style shirt is always a great choice.
Layering is also another great strategy. Adding an oversized sweater not only keeps things professional, but it also provides warmth and comfort for those long work days.
And if you want to step it up another notch, throw on a leather (or “pleather”) jacket to spice up your ensemble.
Bring the Bling
Let’s be honest – it’s all about the top half.
So why not do it up? Dress up your Zoom look with a statement bib necklace that adds some color and texture to your look. Hoop earrings also add dimension and style to your virtual appearance, but make sure you don’t wear any pieces that will interfere with your headphones.
And definitely avoid stacked bracelets or any other jewelry that makes noise when you move. You want your Zoom attendees to be focused on you – not the jangling of your jewelry.
Enjoy your WFH!
